Shillong, Oct 10: The 27th Senior National Wushu Men and Women Championship is under way  at Assam Regimental Centre. A total of 38 teams of various States and  Union Territories, military, para military to include 610 Men players and 292 Women players participated in the opening ceremony.

Lieutenant General DS Ahuja, AVSM, GOC, 101 Area presided over as Chief Guest for the opening ceremony. In his opening address to the participants he said that Wushu, though a relatively new sport to the country, has gained immense popularity. India has won four bronze medals in the Asian games within the comparatively short time and that the game has found popular following in the country.

With high hopes for inclusion of Wushu in the 2020 or the 2024 Olympics, I am sure that this pool of talented sportsmen in front of us will bring us great victories and laurels in the years to come.

Brig RK Gaikwad, Commandant, ARC highlighted that Wushutrg emphasises on quickness, explosive power, and natural, relaxed movement. The Wushu practitioner must combine flexibility with strength, speed with flawless technique and fierce intent with effortless execution.

This is why a soldier can pick up the martial art faster as he is already fit.  This form of Martial art helps in keeping troops fit and aids in concentration and discipline.  It is apt that Wushu is taught here to personnel of the Army.  Apart from Wushu, the ARC is also the Karate node of the Army.  The boys in the regiment are great sportsmen and have earned laurels in National as well as International events.
