A revised Bill has been drafted to constitute a Corporation named BBNERDC

Shillong, December 04:  A revised Bill has been drafted to constitute a Corporation named Brahmaputra Barak North-East River Development Corporation (BBNERDC) which has been circulated to all North Eastern States, West Bengal, stakeholders Ministries & organizations for their comments on 08.06.2016. The comments from the State Governments of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Sikkim & Tripura are yet awaited.

Flood management being under the purview of the States, the schemes for flood control & anti erosion etc., are formulated and implemented by concerned States as per their own priority. The Union Government supplements the efforts of the States by providing technical guidance and also promotional financial assistance for management of floods in critical areas.

41 Master Plans pertaining to the State of Assam were prepared by Brahmaputra Board, wherein flood and erosion control are the main aspect. Brahmaputra Board prepared Detailed Project Reports of 9 Multi-Purpose projects and Dam Projects, wherein provision for flood control is also proposed.  In addition, the Brahmaputra Board also undertook the following flood and erosion control works up to October 2016.

The project include Protection of Majuli Island from flood and erosion in Assam , Avulsion of Brahmaputra River at Dhola Hatighuli (Assam), Protection of Mankachar Kalair-Alga International Border area  from erosion of river Brahmaputra, Protection of Masalabari International Border area of Dhubri District  from erosion of river Brahmaputra.

A total of 141 projects of State of Assam were approved during XI and XII Plans under Flood Management Programme and an amount of Rs.813.75 crore has been released to Government of Assam till date.

The Central Water Commission under this Ministry maintains a flood forecasting network comprising of 199 flood forecasting stations out of which 26 flood forecasting stations are in the State of Assam.

This information was given by Union Minister of State for Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Balyan in a written reply in Lok Sabha.
