A two-day capacity building on constitutional and legal rights of women was held at Mairang

Mairang, Oct 12: A two-day capacity building programme on constitutional and legal rights of women was held at Tirot Sing Memorial Hall, Pyndemumiong, Mairang which concluded today.

The objective of the programme is to equip and empower members of Seng Kynthei “women’s organisations” and to make them aware of their rights.The programme is a joint initiative taken up by the State Commission for Women (MSCW) in collaboration with the Department of Justice, Ministry of Law & Justice, Government of India.

Theilin Phanbuh, Chairperson of the Meghalaya State Commission for Women, attended the programme as the chief guest.In her address to the gathering, Phanbuh said that the programme is planned throughout the year for different organizations with an aim to reach every nook and corner of the state.

She also expressed hope that through the meeting, participants will be identified as members at the village level and will propagate the message and provide help to women who are victims of domestic violence and rape who are in need of legal aid.

Topics covered in the two day programme include Understanding Gender and Power Relations, Women and Family Law, protection of women from domestic violence act and the role of service providers, sexual harassment of women at workplace, sexual assault, cyber-crime, free legal aids and services, public interest litigation and how to file an FIR.

District Social Welfare Officer, Nongstoin M Kharbhih, Co-ordinatorMSCW Annie Sohtun and Member Secretary MSCW I Tariang attended the programme along with representatives from the Women’s Police unit, District Medical & Health Office and District State Legal Services Authority, Nongstoin.
