Above 5000 people attended the Independence Day celebration at Ampati

Ampati, August 15: The people of South West Garo Hills joined the rest of the country in the celebration of 71st Independence Day, which was celebrated at the district headquarter as well as all block headquarters in the district on Tuesday.

In the ceremonial function held at Ampati Students’ Field, Minister for Home (Police), H.D.R. Lyngdoh unfurled the National Flag and took the Rashtriya Salute before a gathering of over 5000 people and 30 parade contingents consisting of Meghalaya Police, Scouts and Guides and school platoons.

Highlights of the days’ celebration include colourful cultural programme by students, youths, women’s groups and nokmas, children’s sports and exhibition football match played by DC’s XI and Ampati Veterans.

The final match of Monsoon Soccer Challenge, 2017, organized by Ampati Youth Welfare Club, was also played in the afternoon. The match was attended by Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma as the chief guest. The match was interspersed with a display of football drills and performances by local artistes.
