Along with the rest of the world, Olympic Day was celebrated in Meghalaya

Shillong, June 24: Along with the rest of the world, Olympic Day was celebrated in Meghalaya with a day long program in the capital Shillong, highlighting the Olympic values of Move, Learn and Discover amongst the youth and general populace.

The run was organised by the Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA) in collaboration with the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs the program which mobilised the citizens to get  active, learn about Olympic  values and discover new sports based on the three pillars Move, Learn and Discover included the Shillong 10K Run , a Self Defence demonstration by Karate, Wushu and Taekwondo Association and a Fencing and Sport Climbing display.

The Minister of Sports & Youth Affairs, Mr. Banteidor Lyngdoh who was the Chief Guest in the morning flagged off the Shillong 10K Run and the Run4Fun at 7 in the morning. Around 200 athletes including youngsters and senior citizens participated in the 10km run as well as the 4km Run4Fun held in the city.

The Minister, Mr. Banteidor Lyngdoh who encouraged the participants to always be active in sports and wished them the best in the event also ran in a section of the Run for fun along with the members of the MSOA including the Working President, Mr John Kharshiing and Director of Sports, Matsiewdor War Nongbri.

In the men’s category, the winner of the Shillong10K run was Mudang Omo of Assam Rifles with a timing of 34 minutes 44:12 seconds, followed by Synsharlang Wahlang in 34 minutes 55 seconds and in 3rd place, Maikhel Ramsiej clocking 35 minutes 19:22 seconds.

Miss Pynhun Chulet of Jowai won the 10km womens category run in 44minutes 15 seconds followed by Daroshisha Iangiuh in 44 minutes 25 secs and Dateibankynmaw Marwein clocking 46 minutes 40 seconds.

A prize money of 10,000/-, 7000/- and 5000/- were awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd winners.71 year old, Samson Killing was the oldest runner in the Shillong 10K Run. After the Shillong 10k run, the demonstration on Self Defence, Fencing and Sport Climbing display at the State Central Library premises was attended by the Chief Guest, Mr. P.B.O Warjri, IAS (retd), Meghalaya Chief Information Commissioner.

In his address, Mr. P. B. O. Warjri, exhorted the students from various schools in the capital and athletes to imbibe the Olympic values of Respect and Honesty. Referring to the Self Defense for the Girl child demonstration, he stressed on the need to fight the growing crime against women by all sections of the society.

Besides the active participation of the various Sports Association and Schools from the city, Olympic Day celebration  was supported  by the Bharat Scouts and Guides, medical teams from the District Health office, SP Shillong Traffic Police and the District Education office.
