AYWO allege that Transport Operator in Garo Hills charging high rate from commuters

Shillong, Feb 13: The Commissioner and Secretary to the Govt of Meghalaya, Transport Department has issued a Notification on 10th August 2018  in accordance with the power conferred under MV Act 1988 with Notification No. TPT.34/91/392 and fixed the prescribed rates for the Commercial Transportation Operators’ to charge as per the Order.

In pursuant of the matter, AYWO basing on this notification and after receiving numerous complaints from general public especially the Students’ fraternity about the illegal hike of rates, urge DC to look into the matter, since the Operators’ is charging New High Rate,  which is high and above the prescribed rates issued by the Govt of Meghalaya, whereby, DC of West Garo Hills issued an Order on 29th of November 2018, directing the concerned DTO to make sure that the Order is implemented in letter and Spirit.

But to our utter surprise, most of the Transport Operators’ operating in West Garo Hills, till date, is blatantly and irresponsibly refusing to adhere to the Notification and therefore needs to be reprimanded for undermining the departmental Order, which attracts the various section of CrPc and IPC. These ‘illegal’ charging of high rates is nothing but the irresponsible and insensible act on the part of Transport Operators’ to upkeep their ambitions to make the Service as ‘Profit Making Business’.

Time and again, be it official and unofficial, the AYWO request the DTO in person to look into the matter and appraised him about the wrongdoings’ of Transport Operators’  for the better interest of our people. But the Voice of our people landed on deaf ear of authorities. Despite the ‘standing order’ of Commissioner, Transport Department, the concerned authorities fails to implement it and shouldering our people with ‘illegal’ and ‘unnecessary’ burden.

The organisation being as watchdog of our Society, resent this trend of illegal act and will fight for our people. Many people is facing the brunt of this illegal act and most of the time, our innocent people were getting fooled that their Association revised the rate stating multiple reasons for the hike including hike in petrol/diesel price.

The AYWO is against this illegal hike of commercial transportation and asked the operators’. Are they empowered to change the Rate undermining the ‘standing order’ of Commissioner, Govt of Meghalaya, Is it appropriate to harass the genuine commuters’ by charging illegal price and simply say that this was done because of fuel hike?

This is not acceptable and needs to be stopped. The Transport Operators’ cannot hike the rate of transportation as per their whims and fancies and should charge as prescribe Rate by Govt of Meghalaya. Instead of resorting to illegal act, the operators’ should have approach the concern authorities and air their grievances if they are facing brunt of this order. AYWO is not against Operators’ but we are with people and people want that this notification should be adhered with.

The AYWO urge DTO to be sincere enough in implementing this important notice. Take appropriate measures against the defaulters’. Entrust your Enforcement Inspectors’ to inspect the Travel Agencies of WGH or else be ready for a music to be heard loud and clear. Take this matter as an utmost importance and immediate action should be initiated. Cancel the license of the defaulters’, whoever it may be, be it Travel Agency, Association, Drivers’, handlers etc and set an example for the others to follow the suit.

As a nodal agency for smooth implementation of the Order, it is imperative on part of the DTO office to do the needful, which in turn will served as a deciding factor for the financial unsound masses. Don’t allow to think that DTO is incompetent and incapable to execute the order.
