Bamboo, medicinal plants, shade trees planted at Apeejay Tea Estates on W.E Day

Shillong June 5: World Environment Day was celebrated across 14 estates of Apeejay Tea today. At Budlabeta, 150 bamboo saplings were planted by 40 students at Bokpara division while in-filling was done at the medicinal plant garden in BBOG East Side Lower Primary School.

The garden also plans to plant over 100 fruit trees in Bokpara in the days to come. At Hilika, World Environment Day was celebrated over two days where a session on conservation of eco-systems and habitats of birds was conducted by Baputi Handique, an employee of Apeejay Tea’s Hilika TE and an avid crusader for conservation of birds, yesterday.

Today, the estate organized a plantation drive where 80 students took part to plant 80 saplings at Pathar Side and Line Side of the estate. The plantation drive was preceded by an awareness talk on the importance of planting trees.

At Muttrapore, 101 saplings were planted at the crèche. 100 saplings comprising fruit trees like mango, jackfruit, plum and guava were planted at Kharjan at the hospital premises. At Hokonguri, 100 saplings were planted at the schools, creches, clubs and hospital.

About 40 students from 3 lower primary schools of the estate participated in the event. The saplings were taken from the nursery and comprised fruits, vegetables and other plants. At Borjuli, 40 students planted over 50 saplings of fruit and shade trees inside as well as outside the premises of Borjuli Lower Primary School. A talk on conservation of plants and environment was held by the Welfare Officer and Headmaster of the school.

At Khobong, 150 students observed the day by planting 312 saplings, of which 150 were bamboo plants procured from the forest department, across all 4 divisions. This was preceded by an awareness talk based on this year’s theme for World Environment Day and the need for planting trees.

At Suffry, over 40 students planted 100 fruit trees which were supplied by the Government Social Forestry, located at Napuk in Charaideo district. The estate manager spoke to the students about this year’s theme and the need for planting trees. Starting today, the estate will be planting trees for one week at various places like labour club, staff club, crèche, Mother’s club and hospitals.

Talup Tea Estate witnessed in-filling of saplings in 3 schools where 800 trees were planted last year on WED as well as a drawing competition at Talup Lower Primary Schools. Besides these, WED was also observed at Dhulapadung, Napuk, Budlapara, Jaboka and Pengaree by planting saplings of various kinds of trees.
