Shillong, March 03: Frequent seizures by the alert BSF troops indicate, attempt of smuggling of cattle has shown a phenomenal increase this year at International border of Meghalaya. Though desperation on the part of cattle smugglers is seen, as they are making very daring bids to cross over the cattle to Bangladesh but somehow they have not been successful.
On Saturday the 02 March 2019 the cautious BSF troops deployed at Lyngkhat in East Khasi Hills Distt of Meghalaya noticed some suspected movement near International Border. The Ops party rushed towards the spot resultantly miscreants ran away taking the cover of thick vegetation.
The BSF troops recovered 16 cattle worth approximate more than Rs. 3.5 lac. These cattle were being smuggled from India to Bangladesh. It is mentioned that the smugglers trying to smuggle cattle from unfenced area but the alert BSF jawan always foil their attempts. Resultantly the smugglers have also tried to smuggle cattle through fenced area by fence breaching at the several instances.
On the same day in another incident the BSF troops deployed at Hawaitilla, West Jaintia Hills and Jatrakona, South Garo Hills seized 37 cattle worth appx more than Rs. 7 lac while being smuggled from India to Bangladesh. The 444 kms Indo-Bangladesh border with Meghalaya State interspersed with riverine, dense forests and hilly terrain which provide ideal conditions for cattle smuggling.
The increasing demand in Bangladesh and high profit involved lures smugglers to indulge in cattle smuggling despite of heavy vigil by the Border guards. Inclement weather also plays supportive role for these criminals. The alert BSF troops are heavily engaged in curbing this menace which has suddenly increased in Meghalaya since last few months.
The BSF has stepped up its special drive against the illegal intruders and has intensified its operations on the Indo-Bangladesh Border to prevent nefarious design of trans-border criminals to maintain tranquility in bordering areas of Meghalaya state. All the seized items handed over to concerned department for further legal action.
