Congress MLA from Assam met Lahkmen and Dr Mukul, seeks safe passage for migrant labourers

Shillong, March 05: The MLA from the Congress party from Assam today met meghalaya Home Minister Mr Lahkmen Rymbui and the leader of opposition in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly seeking safe passage from the migrants labour who were stuck in Ichamati in East Khasi Hills District after the clash where on e KSU members expired in the incident.

The three delegation was let  by Boko legislators Smti Nandita Das, in the meeting both the Government and the opposition the deligation seek the intervention for the safe retun of the migrants labourers back to Assam.

Talking to media after meeting with the Home Minister and leader of opposition Smti Das said that there were report that migrant labourers, numbering around 500, have been stuck in places under Shella in Sohra civil sub-division and other parts of East Khasi Hills.

Smiti Das said that the delegation have requested the state government to secure the safe passage of the migrant labourers who have been stuck in different parts and who want to return home.

The delegation said both states have been sharing a cordial relationship for the past many years, and they wanted that the same should continue. The delegation will also meet Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday to discuss on the situation.

Smti Das said many people from Assam visit Meghalaya for various purposes while there are many construction workers. She said that family members of those migrants are worried for their safety.

Smti Das inform that the home minister reportedly told the delegation that the government was serious on the matter, and to maintain good relations between the states, the government would take all the necessary steps.

Dr Mukul said that this is a common concern and  restoring peace and normalcy in the state and the region is needed. They are aware of the fact that the recent lawlessness that has come as a fallout of the Ichamati incident has vitiated the environment of peace and harmony.

The incident has generated a sense of anxiety and insecurity amongst the minds of the family members of many people. As per inputs, there are a substantial number of migrant workers from Assam who have been brought by contractors.

Meghalaya and Assam are interdependent and the people are directly or indirectly interconnected. It is important to appreciate their initiative in reaching out to the government,” the former Meghalaya chief minister said.
