DC of WGH District issued directive all Govt- Private to adopt the idea of Learn from a Village

Shillong, May 16:   The Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills has issued a directive instructing all Government and Private Secondary & Higher Secondary School from Tura town to adopt the idea of Learn from a Village proposed by the District Administration, West Garo Hills, Tura.

It may be mentioned that whereas the digital mode of education is being focussed in various schools in urban area, it was observed that they are still lacking in various practical aspects of civic, social and environmental issues for which few schools have taken commendable steps too.

Therefore, in order to make it more comprehensive, experienced and structured, the District Administration has under the Project STAR came out with an idea of Learn from a Village (Songadamni Dakbewalrangko Skie Ra∙ani) with a vision to provide a comprehensive platform for students especially from urban areas to experience rural life with the following broad purposes.

The Deputy Commissioner has informed that the purpose is to experience more comprehensive view of rural life, people, culture and tradition, including interaction with rural children, to bridge urban – rural divide, make children adaptable to rural environment so that they can take up vocation or entrepreneurship happily in rural areas in future.

Also more importantly to sensitize children for appreciating Dignity of Labour, to experience cropping pattern, animal husbandry and other livelihood activities by the villages, actively take part in it and appreciate it, to know about various developmental activities performed by various agencies on water conservation, water harvesting, forest, wildlife conservation and sustainable development and to conduct cleaning drive, plantation drive, sensitization with the villages on various environmental and social issues.

Further, the Deputy Commissioner has requested each school to identify a village or cluster within 15-20 km as per their convenience and the village profile will be shared by the District Administration as and when the chosen village is intimidated to them. If any help is required by the schools to select the village, the District Administration would be pleased to extend necessary assistance.

Moreover, the school authorities may take their students to village areas as per their convenience on weekend or holidays or any other day convenient to them, but the Trip Schedule should be informed to the District Administration prior to their visit. In the meantime, school students are requested to use refilled water bottles from home or school for the trip and use of plastics should be kept to the minimum and no garbage should be left in the village by the students.

Every trip should be precluded with a brief and students’ feedback on the trip is essential. This program is voluntary for all the schools as of now and the Deputy Commissioner is pleased to accompany the schools in few of these excursions and share his practical experience on life in rural areas.
