Shillong, March 12: The President of the United Democratic Party (UDP) Dr Donkupar Roy put up by the ruling has win the election of the Speaker to the 10th Meghalaya Legislative Assembly defeating the opposition candidate Mr Winnerson D Sangma by securing 35 votes.
The opposition candidate secured 20 votes, one is invalid and the lone KHNAM MLA mar Adelbert Nongrum abstains from voting. All 56 legislators today participate in the election of the speaker in the special session today.
After the counting of vote is completed the preterm speaker Mr Timothy Shira declare that Dr Donkupar Roy was elected as Speaker to the 10th Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
The newly elected Speaker was escorted by chief minister Conrad Sangma and Opposition Leader Mukul Sangma to the chair before he took over the proceedings of the House.
