Speaking to the gathering during his Inaugural Speech, Chief Minister, Dr Mukul M Sangma said the inauguration of the police station is an important extension of the institution of governance to ensure effective, accountable and inclusive government. He said that the government in responding to the needs and aspirations of the people is also trying to take care of the developmental disparities across the state. He also added that to sustain the momentum of growth there is a need to have visible law enforcing agencies in the state that will generate in the people a sense of safe and secure environment besides creating a deterrence to crime and lawlessness.

“Nartiang with its beautiful and rich culture, its unique and exclusive history attached to it can be leveraged upon for future growth and prosperity for the whole Eastern part of the state,” said the Chief Minister. He added that Tourism can bring transformative changes in the socio-economic landscape of the area. He also said that in the wake of the NGT ban there has been a dislocation of livelihood in West and East Jaintia Hills and there is a need to find new and alternative means of livelihood that is sustainable and remunerative. He informed that areas that have been depleted because of mining will be reclaimed for farming activities. He also urged upon the people to look at other attractive options of livelihood.

The Chief Minister in his address also urged upon all to collectively come together to fight crimes against women and children and sought the cooperation of all to address the concerns of rising road accidents and drug menace.

Nartiang Police Station will cover 110 villages with Siatsama Police Outpost and Khanduli Battalion Outpost under its jurisdiction. The area of this police station spreads from boundaries of Ri Bhoi District in the North, West Hamrem District, Assam on its East, Jowai Police Station jurisdiction on its Suth and East Khasi Hills on its West.

Nartiang Police Investigation Centre was sanctioned in the year 1972 and started functioning from an old barrack of PWD (R) office with one Sub Inspector, one head constable and six constables. In the year 1995 Nartiang PIC shifted to its present location and continues to function from there.

With the limited staff and resources for the past 44 years, the PIC catered policing services to 60 villages. The services includes crime prevention, crime investigation, law and order maintenance, area domination, anti-militancy operation, various verifications, grievance redressal and bestowal of a feeling of peace and security to all.

Due to the increase in population and vast area that Nartiang PIC has to cover, it was felt that the PIC should be upgraded to a full fledged Police Station and a proposal was sent to the Police Station in the year 2014.

Kennedy Khyriem, Parliamentary Secretary, Robinus Syngkon, MLA, Mowkaiaw, Hopeful Bamon, MLA, Sutnga-Saipung, Commissioner & Secretary, Home (Police), E P Kharbih and other senior officials from the district were also present on the occasion.
