Gov of Meghalaya said at 12th Convocation of MLCU, education is not just to earn a job

Shillong, August 21: The MLCU held its 12th Convocation on the 21st of August 2019 at Windermere Resorts, Umpling Shillong. This year, the Convocation was presided by Mr  Tathagata Roy, Governor of Meghalaya in the presence of Dr. Johnny Oommen and Mrs. Mercy John, a couple serving in Christian Hospital, Bissamcutack who are this year’s Convocation speakers, besides the distinguished guests, invitees and parents of the graduates.

In this Convocation, 663 students graduated, out of which, 369  undergraduate, post graduate and diploma students attended the Convocation and were awarded their Bachelor’s, Master’s, Diploma and Post Graduate Diploma degrees by MLCU.

Further, 7 research scholars were granted a Doctor of Philosophy and 1 was awarded an MPhil degree. An Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy in Education was awarded to former Inspector of Schools, Mrs Billiancy Lamare in recognition of her outstanding contribution in the field of education, especially for the initiative of free schooling for the underprivileged that she championed along with Sein Jaintia.

While congratulating the students and the University, the Governor, in his speech, reminded the graduating students that an education is not just to earn them a job but to raise them to a whole new level.

In her speech, Mercy John, the Convocation speaker reminded the students that their skills and gifts are not for them to use but to give out to others. “Listen to the beat of the other drummers, do not just listen to what everyone else is listening to”, she added.

Dr.Johnny Oommen, the fellow Convocation speaker, stated that education is not evaluated by marks and scores and that the graduates should not let their degrees or subject choices define them. “We are not born to save and change the world, we are born to share the pain of people”.

The little things we do have big meanings. You may not get what you want but want what you get”, he further stated. This year 4 alumni members were given the Alumni Award for their outstanding contribution in their respective fields.
