Shillong June 07: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today inaugurated the Higher Secondary (Arts) section of the Shillong Public School, Shillong in the presence of Education Minister Shri. Lahkmen Rymbui.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the School’s Silver Jubilee celebrations the Chief Minister said that the government accords top priority to the education sector even as he urged all stakeholders to work with a committed effort to improve the education scenario in the State. Education is the defining factor in the overall progress of the State, we must all work together with a determined mindset to overcome all the challenges in the education sector, he added.
Highlighting the stark difference in the quality of education in the urban and rural areas the Chief Minister said that the government is mulling the idea of focusing its resources on the worst performing schools across the State to improve and bring it on par with other better performing schools.
The Chief Minister also underlined the need for corrective measures and come out with strategies to combat the low pass percentage of Students in the SSLC exams in the State.‘Every child across the State should be entitled to quality education. In spite of the financial constraints the government is doing its best to for the overall improvement of the education sector’, he said.
Earlier during his address education minister Lahkmen Rymbui underlined the need to formulate a curriculum framework so that students from the State get the best education to enable them to compete with the rest of the country.
Lamenting on the State’s low pass percentage of 36.2 in the NEET exam the education minister said that a major reform was needed in the use of textbooks for students from the State. In order to give an edge to students in competitive exams the government has adopted the use of NCERT textbooks for Arts and Science streams.
Stating that the education system must be prepared and adapt to the changing needs of the present times the education minister told the gathering that the government was committed towards the implementation of various programs and interventions to streamline the education sector. The Silver Jubilee Magazine of the school was also released on the occasion.
