Ka Phan Nonglait’s legacy celebrated at Nongrmai as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav

Mairang, August, 31: Paying rich tributes to Khasi freedom fighter, Ka Phan Nonglait, a programme on Theatre, Folk Dance and Patriotic Songs entitled “Ka Phan Nonglait”- Tribute to Unsung Heroes was organized today evening as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav by the North East Zone Cultural Centre (NEZCC), Dimapur, Ministry of Culture, Government of India in collaboration with the Directorate of Arts and Culture, Government of Meghalaya  at her birth place, Nongrmai village, Eastern West Khasi Hills District.

The programme was attended by Deputy Commissioner, Eastern West Khasi Hills District, Shri W. Nongsiej as Chief Guest in the presence of the Syiem of Hima Nongkhlaw, Pa’iem P.M Syiemlieh, Myntri of Hima Nongkhlaw, Shri Boldness L. Nongum, Supreme Court Advocate and Author of the book “Ka Phan Nonglait- A Lady Freedom Fighter of India”, Shri Daniel Stone Lyngdoh Nonglait, Assistant Director, Directorate of Arts and Culture, Government of Meghalaya Smti. D. Kharjana, other government officials,  Headman of Nongrmai village, Shri S. Nongrang, representatives of the Lyngdoh Nonglait clan, students and people of the area.

During his address at the programme, Chief Guest, Deputy Commissioner, Eastern West Khasi Hills District, Shri W. Nongsiej dwelt at length on the history and legacy of Ka Phan Nonglait in her journey as a brave freedom fighter and an advocate of women’s rights even as he urged upon the gathering to draw inspiration from the life and times of Ka Phan Nonglait by striving to conserve one’s unique culture, identity and tradition and to stand up against exploitation of the women folk.

The programme featured patriotic songs and colourful cultural dances presented by different artistes of the district as also those from the state capital, Shillong. The major highlight of the programme was the impactful play on the life and struggle of Ka Phan Nonglait performed by theatre artiste, Smti. Lapdiang Syiem and her group.

Nongrang and representative of the Lyngdoh Nonglait clan, Shri Marshall Lyngdoh Nonglait.
