KSU Nongstoin urged EM in-charge Labour to tighten in issuing of labour license

Shillong,November 28: The Khasi Student Union Nongstoin Circle today met the Executive Member in-charge Labour, Mr Blandingstar Warjri in the meeting the organization urged the EM in-charge to tighten in issuing of labour license to non-tribal’s especially in West Khasi Hills district.

Speaking to reporters after meeting the EM in-charge Labour, general secretary KSU Nongstoin, Franklinroy Syiemiong said, the organization have received many complaints from daily wage earners on the difficulty they face in finding employment and the reason for the unemployment is because many contractors in Nongstoin give employment to non-tribal’s.”

He informed that the Union had also requested the EM to insert a clause whereby all the non-tribal’s labourers applying for a labour license should first provide a work permit as per the Meghalaya Workmen Act 2013 of the state government before issuing the license.

When asked on the assurance given by the EM, he said, The EM in-charge Labour has assured the Union that the matter will be examined and will also be taken up with the Executive Committee of the Council.

Mr Syiemiong however said the Union is disappointed since there has not been any initiative from the KHADC to carry out checking in Nongstoin to find out whether the non-tribal workers have proper documents or not.

He informed that in West Khasi Hills district around 94 non tribal labourers have been issued labour license since January 1, 2017 till October 4, 2017. But the KSU said that in their observation the presence of non-tribal workers has exceeded the number of registered labourers.
