Meghalaya has the scarcity of fodder, has to import from Assam to feed the Animals

Shillong, March 11:  The farmers from Meghalaya mostly depend on the imported fodder mainly from Assam to feed the animals; particularly poultry feed, Pig feed and even for Cows. This has led to the increased in the production cost in live stock.

The farmers who are taking poultry farm, piggery farms and cattle farm have to depend mainly on the feed that is coming from outside the state, mainly from Assam and Siliguri of West Bengal. The cost of these feeds becomes costlier which add up to the production cost.

Coming particularly to poultry, the chicken are coming from Assam, the Veterinary department government of Meghalaya is not in the position   to provide this chickens for the farmers.

The local farmers who has taken up Poultry, Piggery as their livelily hood are facing stiff competition with the poultry and   piggery that is coming from outside the state, they are cheaper than the local product.

The state government over the years has not taken initiative to produce fodder locally by using the availability of local maize or encourage the famers to grow more so that the cost of feed production in the state will come down.

When the question put to the Deputy Chief Minister, Mr Prestone Tynsong who is also looking after the department of Animals Husbandry and Veterinary said that the government is looking into the issued.
