Shillong, July 18: The North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO) today denies on the accusation that the flash flood occurred in Assam especially in Lakhimpur district was due to the presence of Ranganadi Hydro Electric Plant in Arunachal Pradesh.
The Chairman of NEEPCO Mr. A.G West Kharkongor and Managing Director, Mr. B.K Singh the Technical Director, Mr. S.B Borgohain the Director of Personal and Mr. M.S Jyrwa the Executive Director in charge of Operation and Maintenance claimed that due to unprecedented rainfall throughout the region which lead the reservoir of Ranganadi dam to release the excess water, but it was done in a controlling manner dully control the discharge of water. If this has not been done the downstream situation could have been worsen.
Along the Ranganadi River there are numbers of tributaries in the downstream of the dam which also flow sufficient water from the respective catchment area to the main river hence the dam cannot hold water beyond EL 567.0 meter at any point of time and diverting 160 cubic meter of water for power generation through Dikrong River.
The NEEPCO officials recalled that this type of situation occurred in 2008 when various dignitaries and committees has visited the sites and come with the conclusion that this is a natural phenomenon and not connected to the dam.
The NEEPCO official stated that from the corporation they have issue a warning to the entire settler on the river side on the downstream that not to take up any agriculture activities, this warning has been issued that during the full monsoon season people should venture any activities to avoid any eventualities in case there is a discharge of water from the reservoir.
Mr Kharkongor also inform that prior of releasing of water from the dam the authority in charge of the dam will always alarm the people with the siren so that people who are in the downstream, should immediately flee from the area to a safer place, there are times where the people from office went personally to tell the people to move from the area.
