The Executive Committee and the Dorbar Shnong of Nohwet Village, East Khasi Hills, collaborated with the Martin Luther Christian University during the cleaning drive in the village which was held on 1st July 2017.
The cleaning drive is a part of the Biannual Cleaning Drive of the village, which the villagers have been practicing since time immemorial. The whole village takes part in the cleaning drive and it culminates in the Living Root Bridge which is located in the village.
The headman of the village, Mr. Phanistar Kharduia while speaking about the event said, “We have been organising this cleaning drive for many years now and we try to follow our traditional customs, one of them being the the maintenance and the preservation of the Living Root Bridge in the village.”
Mr. Kharduia also informed that efforts to promote the village as a tourist destination has been underway and he hoped that the tourist ms who want visit the Bridge via Mawlynnong would visit their village.
He said, “Our village also has the potential to be a tourist attraction and we are doing our best to preserve and maintain its natural beauty and heritage.”
The head man also informed that the fact that Martin Luther Christian University his known for its Community Outreach Programmes, and it’s close relationship with the different communities in the region and therefore the University was the logical choice to partner with for this initiative and Mr. Kharduia concluded that he hoped the University will continue to collaborate with the Village in the future.
The University was represented by the faculty of Department of Environment and Traditional Ecosystems; Department of Tourism and Travel Management; and the students and faculty members of the Students Affairs Committee, MLCU.
