Rotary Club of Orchid City Shillong organised a Tree Plantation Drive at Nongumlong

Shillong, Sept 13: Rotary Club of Orchid City Shillong organised a Tree Plantation Drive under its mega tree plantation initiative, “Project Hariyali”, sponsored by Mahindra Finance, at Nongumlong Village, Shillong. Shri Hamletson Dohling, Honorable Cabinet Minister, Govt. of Meghalaya, graced the event as the Chief Guest.

The Project Hariyali, a green movement to strengthen the lungs of planet, kick-off in Meghalaya on 7th Sept., and since then, the club has conducted plantation drive with fruit-bearing tree saplings at Wahkhen Village.

The  two locations in R-Bhoi District Kyrdemkulai Village and Rilong Umran Farm, multiple locations in West Jaintia Hills in collaboration with Rotary Club of Jowai and concluded at Nongumlong Village.

Shri Iarap Nongruid, Headman of Nongumlong Village, welcomed everyone on the occasion and thanked the Rotary Club for this wonderful initiative to save the green. President of the Club, Rtn Monica Chanda thanked everyone on the occasion and mentioned that this project is need of the hour.

“Green movement is the best solution to saving environment and arresting pollution”, was the message given by Shri Vivek Kumar, Project Chair- Hariyali. He mentioned that, trees play a critical role for people and the planet.

Trees not only provide free oxygen, sequester carbon dioxide, but it also provides numerous tangible and intangible benefits to environment and living beings. He mentioned that we should not only plant trees, but together take the responsibility to care for it and see it grow.

The Cabinet Minister, Shri Hamletson Dohling said that green is the future and stressed on taking care of the plants after plantation. He said that the School students should tag a tree with their name and take care of it and see it grow and fruit as they will grow in their lives.

He thanked Rotary Club of Orchid City Shillong and Mahindra Finance for starting this wonderful green movement and he asked the club to reach widely and help the community in his constituency and throughout Meghalaya, while promising his support for such initiatives.

Honorable Archbishop of Shillong, Most Rev. Victor Lyngdoh, joined the green movement and planted a tree sapling on the occasion. He said that we all should take responsibility and play an important role in saving environment by planting trees and caring for it.

The Headman, Dorbar members, and villagers thanked Rotary Club of Orchid City Shillong and Mahindra Finance for this wonderful initiative in their village and the Honorable Cabinet Minister, Shri Hamletson Dohling for joining the movement despite his very tight schedule due to assembly sessions.
