Shillong, May 08: The cabinet today in the meeting decided to say ‘No’ to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 proposed by the central Government, said the Deputy Chief Minister Mr Prestone Tynsong to the media after the cabinet meeting.
The cabinet decided that the state government will sent the representation to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) opposing to the proposed amendment to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. The Committee will visit Meghalaya on the 10 and 11 of this month to solicit views from the public on this proposed amendment.
In the proposed amendment bill it said that “ provided that person belonging to minorities communities, namely, Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhist, Jains, Parsis and Christian from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan who have been exempted by the central Government, by or under clause (c) of sub section (2) of Section 3 of the passport (Entry India) Act 1920 or from the application of the provision of the foreigners Act, 1946 or any order made thereunder. Shall not be treated as illegal migrants for the purpose of this Act;.
The others proposal under the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, said that “ provided that for the person belonging to the minority communities, namely , Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhist, Jains, Parsis and Christian from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, the aggregate period of residence or service of a government in India as required under the clause “hall be read as “not less than six years” in place not less than eleven years”.
The Deputy Chief Minister Mr Prestone Tynsong that the cabinet after the discussion decided to opposed to the proposed amendment brought by the central government. If this amendment is passed it posed a great threat to the people of Meghalaya who are in minority, therefore the cabinet said No to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 of the central government.
