The Chief Minister inaugurate “Fit India Movement” by walking from Polo to Secretariat

Shillong, August 29: Fit India Movement, a nationwide movement that was launched today by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi at India Gandhi Indoor Stadium at Delhi was also launched in Meghalaya here today by Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma.

The Chief Minister of Meghalaya Mr  Conrad K Sangma launched the Fit India Movement in the State by ‘Walk to Work’ and walking from his official residence at Polo to the Secretariat where an official launch programme was held at Yojana Bhawan, Main Secretariat.

Speaking to the gathering, Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma said that the people of the State are aware of fitness and has been a part of tradition and culture and even in the present times a lot of the youth of the State are physically very active.

“The problem is that in our day to day lives and the different responsibilities that we have as a student, officer or public leader we sometimes tend to forget that aspect and this programme today is to remind us to take out a certain time in our day to remain active and fit,” he said. He added that Fitness is not just about the physical health but a holistic well being and fitness of physical, mental and spiritual health.

The Chief Minister also said that as a part of the Fit India Movement the Walk to Work on Wednesday in short called WWW would be initiated by him wherein the Chief Minister would walk to office once a week on Wednesdays. “I request all officials, students and whoever who would like to join this campaign to walk to work and their institutions on Wednesdays,” he said.

He said though this is not mandatory for all as there are challenges and constraints of distance and other factors he urged all to whom it is possible to join WWW and added that by doing this it will have multiple benefits as it would reduce carbon emissions, reduce traffic , save expenses on fuel at the same time improve health. The Chief Minister also briefly highlighted the various initiatives of the government in the Health sector.

The Chief Minister earlier administered the Fitness pledge to the gathering. Also present during the launch were Minister, Health, A L Hek, Chief Secretary P S Thangkhiew and other senior officials and heads of departments.
