The CRPF and Dorbar Shnong, Lawmali organise cleaning drive of river Wahumkhrah

Shillong, March 23: As part of its regular drive under the “Swachhata Abhiyan” in the city of Shillong, the 67th Battalion, CRPF and Dorbar Shnong, Lawmali have joined hands to organise a major cleanliness initiative in the surrounding areas of river Umkhrah near the Polo Grounds.

As part of the initiative, garbage and other waste accumulated on the river bed are being removed to ease the flow of water along the stretch. In addition, the initiative also involves bolstering of the river banks with mud and earth so as to reduce the problem of soil erosion on the stretch.

To raise awareness for the initiative, a programme was organised on 23.03.2021 in the Polo Grounds area of the city which was attended by, besides the personnel and officers of the 67 Bn, CRPF, Shri Alok Bhattacharya, Commandant, 67 Bn, CRPF, Shri B. Khongwir, Rangbah Shnong, Shri. L. Lyngdoh Kynshi, General Secretary as well as Sh. W. Lyngwa, executive member of the Lawmali Tyllum Dorbar Shnong along with other local residents and media personnel.

On the occasion, the organisers expressed their long term commitment to continue with the cleanliness drive in the area. They also expressed their desire to undertake beautification of the river bank stretch through afforestation and similar such initiatives.

The organisers also urged the local residents of the area to adopt sustainable garbage disposal practices so as to reduce damage to the local environment thereby sustaining the initiative.
