The demand for inclusion of Khasi language in the Eight Schedule will get priority: Dr Donkupar

Shillong, Sept 12: The foundation day of the Khasi Authors’ Society was observe Tuesday with programmes of felicitation of meritorious students who excelled in academic studies, release of new books and the seminar on the topic of indigenous Khasi language, as part of the movement for recognition of Khasi language in the Eight Scheduled to the Constitution of India.

The inaugural session was graced by Dr Donkupar Roy, Speaker, Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Mr S K Sun, MLA of Mawphlang and a host of literary luminaries including the former MP, veteran Khasi author and academician Dr Bajubon Roy Kharlukhi, former Home Minister and former Vice Chancellor Martin Luther Christian University, Mr R G Lyngdoh, Khasi Authors’ Society’s President, Dr D R L Nonglait, Head of Khasi Deartment North Eastern Hill University, Prof Antionette Kharmalki in the presence of college teachers students and members of Khasi Authors’ Society.

In his inaugural address, the Chief Guest Dr Donkupar Roy stated “This long pending demand should be taken up seriously and I will ensure that it must be given priority in the forthcoming Assembly session”. The Guest of Honour Mr S K Sun narrated his little experience as a legislator and elaborated on the formal procedure for the purpose of securing the official recognition of Khasi language. Earlier, the President of Khasi Authors’ Society gave an introductory speech on the history of the movement.

During the session of the seminar R G Lyngdoh admitted his lack of sufficient knowledge about Khasi literature, even as he spoke at length on vital issues prevailing in the State pertaining to the growth of Khasi language. He emphasised on the need to learn the language by top government officials, he said “The IAS officers posted in different districts of the State should be facilitated to learn the local language, so as to understand the genuine aspirations of the public in the rural areas”.

The Chief Guest, Dr Donkupar Roy released three books ‘Haba im ka ktien, Im ka jaitbynriew’ by the Editorial Board of Khasi Authors’ Society, Ki Nongthohkot Khasi- VII by Mr K W Nongrum and ‘Ki Sai Snier Syrdoh Tyngier’ by Mr Andreas Sun, while the Guest of Honour, S K Sun release the soft launch of a book ‘Ka Kheiñkur Kheiñkha Khasi’ on The Khasi Matrilineal Clan Lineage by Mr Raphael Warjri.

With the motive to inspire and encourage the learning of mother tongue six students were felicitated, they are Silencegist Sanglyne of St Anthony’s Higher Secondary School and Phibadashisha Tongper of Sohkha Government Higher Secondary School for securing 94 marks in Khasi MIL in the HSSLC (Science) Examination, Grace Mary Warbah of Shillong College for securing 92 marks in Khasi MIL in the HSSLC (Commerce) Examination.

Miss Diana Pakem of St Anthony’s Higher Secondary School and Overlander Kharumnuid for securing 90 marks in the HSSLC (Arts) Exanmination,  Elansing Sohkhlet of St John Bosco Higher Secondary School, Sohra for securing 83 marks in Khasi Elective HSSLC (Arts) Examination, Phibadonbok Nongtraw of Loreto Convent for securing 99 marks in Khasi Second language in the ICSE, Effie Indariti Syiem of Anderson Higher Secondary School, Nongstoin for scoring 95 in Khasi MIL of the SSLC Examination.
