Participants, who attended the workshop included Doctors, medical social workers and nurses from various hospitals. The Director NEIGRIHMS Prof (Dr.) D. M. Thappa, was the Guest of honour on the occasion.

He lauded the role of nursing in palliative care, particularly in terminally ill patients. “There is a need to be empathy towards the patients”. He spoke on the problems people face as patients who are diagnosed with cancer. The main problem when you diagnose cancer is breaking the news, telling them of the outcome.

He reminded the participants to always give hope to the person no matter what, help them to cope with whatever comes. The Deputy Director while speaking on the occasion said that although doctors play important part but most of the time patient turns to nurses. At such lowest points and dark times in life, there is a need for soothing and comforting from the palliative care.

Prof (Dr) Bhattacharya HOD Anaesthesiology and I/C palliative care unit in NEIGRIHMS spoke about CNE not being merely a teaching/ training session but it must impact a living enactment of the lecture and  as people when we learn new things from workshops, we must put them into practise.

“Let us come together take the burden of patients suffering, let us share the joys and sorrows with the people suffering with cancer.” There was a panel discussion on the diversity of palliative care on the 2nd day. The 1st annual CNE Bulletin was also released on the occasion.

The Chief Guest mentioned that she was very passionate about communication in patient care. To her, Palliative Care is very personal. Nursing has a huge impact on the patients and important role in moralise what people feel when they hear harsh words coming from nurses and doctors.

The sessions are not about technology. A machine is a machine and you can train anyone to operate a ventilator. The fact is you cannot train a monkey to be compassionate. That is why the nurses are important in Palliative Care. She urges the nurses who attended to make a difference.

A bike rally was organised from POLO to PB and then to NEIGRIHMS on 13th October to create awareness among people of North East regarding palliative care. A musical concert was also arranged in the NEIGRIHMS auditorium to raise funds for the cancer patients.
