The Department of Social Work, MLCU today celebrated the World Social Work Day

Shillong March 20: The Department of Social Work, Martin Luther Christian University today celebrated the World Social Work Day in the university campus along with the rest of the world under the universal theme of ‘Promoting Community and Environmental Sustainability’. This is the second and final year of this theme of the Global Agenda for Social Work and Social Development.

The students of the department of Social Work, MLCU performed a short role play on social awareness and also the importance of environmental sustainability. One of the faculty members of the department Ms. Nandaris Marwein gave a brief report on the major findings from the survey which was done during the community camp which was held on March 12-17, 2018 in the village of Khlookynrin, West Jaintia Hills District.

She informed the gathering that the majority working population of the community are daily wage labourers, framers, coal mine workers. She added that many of the villagers were affected by different health issues like TB, chest problem, cancer and skin infections because of their work in the coal mines.

She also added that many of the water sources in the community are not as clean as the villagers believed and that not boiling the water before drinking it could the cause of diarrhea and typhoid.The students also performed songs and dances from the different tribes of the North East during the programme.
