The District Election Officer said Carrying money above Rs. 50,000/- is prohibited

Shillong, March 12: District Magistrate and District Election Officer, East Khasi Hills District has promulgated an Order under Section 144 CrPC prohibiting any person or group of persons from carrying money above Rs. 50,000/- only in the East Khasi Hills District. This order comes into force with immediate effect and shall remain till the completion of poll procedure.

This order is necessitated following the information that some persons are likely to carry large amount of hard cash to bribe the voters for casting their votes in favour of a particular candidate, and that such action, if allowed, would affect the conduct of free and fair election to the Lok Sabha, 2019 and is likely to cause frustration, quarrel and fights between members of the public leading to law and order problem, breach of peace and tranquility, leading to loss of life and property.

It may be mentioned that the Election Commission of India has announced the General Election to the Lok Sabha, 2019 which will be held in the State on the 11th April, 2019. Following the announcement, the Model Code of Conduct and other instructions of the Election Commission have become operative in the State.

The Election Commission also directs to check bribery of voters during the conduct of any election and ensure that voters exercise their franchise freely and fairly without fear or inducement.
