The EFL University organized National Seminar on ‘Contesting the Site of Sights’

Shillong, June 08: We are what we see. The visual is rapidly “replacing” the common linguistic signs as our primary means of communicating with each other and of the understanding of our world.

The visual culture has become a popular field of study in recent years. Visual culture is concerned with visual events in which the consumer in an interface with visual technology seeks information, meaning or pleasure.

The contemporary visual culture of Northeastern part of India is dominated by visual genres and media such as photograph, television, film, video, cartoons, posters, t-shirts, comics, computer simulations to just name a few. At the same time the ethnic visual cultures also demand attention for preservation as well as critical studies.

In this regard, the  EFL University, Shillong Campus is   organizing a two-day National Seminar on ‘Contesting the Site of Sights: The Discourse of Visual Media Cultures with reference to Northeast India’ on June 10-11, 2019 at the University Campus.

The inaugural function will be held on the June 10, 2019 at the University premises from 9.30 a.m. Professor Kailash.C. Baral, Vice- Chairperson, MAKAIAS, Kolkata, former Director of EFLU Shillong campus and PVC, will be the Chief Guest and Professor. R. K. Satpathy, Honorary Director, ICSSR-NERC, Shillong will be the Guest of Honour on the occasion.

The Seminar seeks to explore and critically study the visual cultures of Northeast India. Recently, they  have witnessed that urban areas in the Northeast India are covered in images and text that reflect a lived cosmopolitanism that accompanies and challenges dominant ways of understanding the region and its component parts. Researches on new insights into the visual culture of Northeast India will find new possibilities for comparative research in this field elsewhere in other parts of Southeast Asia.
