Shillong, August 12: The Formers body from Meghalaya under the banner “Hills Farmers Union” has sent letter to the Meghalaya Agriculture minister Mr Banteidor Lyngdoh requesting the Meghalaya Government to issued the official notification as announce by the Chief Minister Mr Conrad 2020 as the year of the farmers during the 2nd Meghalaya Farmers’ Parliament at Tura on the 9th December, 2019.
In the letter sent to the Agriculture Minister the president of the HFU Mr Commander Shangpliang and the general secretary Mr Allfondbirth Kharsyntiew appreciated the State Government for having declared 2020 as “Year of the Farmers” during the 2nd Meghalaya Farmers’ Parliament at Tura on the 9th December, 2019.
The HFU pointed out that, all know that the year 2020, has not been a good year for the farmers. Farming activities have been badly affected and their income has been drastically reduced because of the present COVID-19 situation.
As the year 2020 has been declared as the “Year of the Farmers,” the farmers have eagerly been expecting that something worthwhile would come from the State government especially in this time of crisis. Astonishingly, no notification has been issued by the State government till date, though the declaration of 2020 as the “Year of the Farmers” is about to complete one year.
Moreover, since 2020 has been declared as the “Year of the Farmers,” we have been expecting that specific packages should have been earmarked by the State Government for the current fiscal year 2020-2021, as well as new initiatives that would help the farmers improve their income, apart from existing schemes of the both the Central and State governments.
To make this 2020 more meaning full as the year of the farmer’s from the HFU sincerely request the department through you to immediately issue an official notification related to the declaration of 2020 as the “Year of the Farmers” and also include 2021 as the Year of the Farmers, along with special packages relating to Agri and allied sectors.
