The IMA PDB Project envisaged a dual approach for the control blindness in India

Shillong, March 09: The PDB Project was conceived and implemented in 2015 by the then Indian Medical Association (IMA) National President, Dr. A Marthanda Pillai, and its activities are going on in full swing as an ongoing program on a nationwide scale for the last three years.

While, the project was launched in many states of India,however, for the North-eastern region the project is scheduled to be launch on 10th March 2018 in Shillong, Meghalaya.

The IMA PDB Project envisaged a dual approach for the control and prevention of diabetic blindness in India. The first measure is to create and spread awareness on Diabetes and second is to screen all diabetics for Diabetic Retinopathy.

The estimated diabetic population in India is approximately 67 million and nearly 30% have diabetic retinopathy which is the cause for blindness from Diabetes. Early detection and timely intervention can prevent diabetic blindness.

To spread awareness about diabetes as a disease that can cause blindness, a motorbike rally will be organized on the 10th March 2018 from 9:00 am to 9:30 am which will begin from Don Bosco Square, Laitumkhrah, Shillong. To flag off the rally, the Superintendent of Police of East Khasi Hills District will be present.

However, to commemorate the launch of the project, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and All India Ophthalmic Society (AIOS) in collaboration with Bansara Eye Care Centre (BECC) and Society for Promotion of Eye Care & Sight (SPECS) will organizean awareness campaign on the “Prevention of Diabetic Blindness” and a “Free Diabetic Screening & Diabetic Retinopathy Camp”.

The Inaugural session and awareness campaign will commence from 10:00 am to 11:00 am which will be held on Saturday, 10th March 2018, at Anton Hall opposite Don Bosco Technical School, Laitumkhrah, Shillong.

The Governor of Meghalaya, Shri. Ganga Prasad, will grace the event as the Chief Guest while many other dignitaries representing AIOS, IMA and various hospitals in Shillong will also be present on the occasion.

Soon after the inauguration of the project launch, the “Free Diabetic Screening and Diabetic Retinopathy Camp” will begin from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. The screening camp is specifically meant for people above 40 years of age, patients with diabetes and person having a family history of diabetes.
