The land acquisition process for the expansion of NH 44 Jowai-Ratacherra Road is on

Jowai, October 09: National highways are the lifeline of any economy. Studies have shown that roads and highways add 2% to the local, state and the national GDP. Earlier this year in an unfortunate accident, 30 people lost their lives, several were injured in Sonapur of East jaintia Hills district mainly due to bad road condition.

The Deputy Commissioner West Jiantia Hills is inform that people avoid going to Agartala via NH 44 instead they go all the way to Guwahati and catch a train. The land acquisition process for the expansion and improvement of NH 44 Jowai-Ratacherra Road is currently on.

The DC of West Jaintia Hills posted in the FB, said that in the District “we have a portion of roughly 9km of the NH 44. However it takes a lot of time to acquire land under the new 2013 Act. In February 2016 we had a meeting with all the landowners and headmen of those villages falling on NH 44 to convince the land owners to allow the construction company, NHAI to build the road, pending compensation”.

The villagers were sticking to their demand that until and unless the compensation is paid they will not allow the work to proceed. This is October and in spite of our best efforts, we still have not completed the Land Acquisition papers because anybody who has gone through the Act would know that the Act is very elaborate.

NHAI has already deposited more than 8 crores with the DC office and they  are just waiting for the Revenue Department  to complete the paper work so that they  can start distributing the compensation cheques.

Further the DC West Jaintia  mention that “We are also in continuous talks with Ministry of Road Transport and Highway to push two  pending projects. Double laning of Dawki-Amlarem-Jowai Road and  Khlie Tyrshi bypass connecting NH 44 to NH 40 E. The people will witness better roads in the district in coming days. Before that, “my earnest request to all the socially conscious citizens to convince the villagers to allow us to work so that we can avoid mishaps such as Sonapur. We ought to choose between life and money”.
