The Meghalaya ASHA Worker’s Union threaten to boycott duty if PPEs in not provided

Shillong, May 12: The Meghalaya ASHA    Worker’s Union (MAWU) today sent a letter to Mr AL Hek Meghalaya Health Minister asking from the Government to provide the ASHA with Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) if the Government could not provide they will have no other option, but to boycott their duty.

The letter that was sent today to the Health Minister was sign by the president of the MAWU Smti Sorilang Marboh and it General Secretary Smti M June Myrsing, the leaders of the Union said that on behalf of ASHA Workers of the State who are the Primary Health Workers at the grassroots level.

The Union in the letter said that,  ASHA are diligently performing duty for attending of all type of health attention/needs especially for pregnant women, children as well as other duties as instructed by the superior authority.

Moreover  at this juncture the government assigned an additional duty  to us ( ASHA) i.e COVID-19 duty daily house visit/survey, daily reporting, weekly reporting. It is a pressure and burden upon us, unfortunately despite of our hard work and dedication the government pay no heed to our grievances:

In the letter they have also mention that their pending dues, entitlements, benefits and incentives are not releasing since 2012 so on and so forth.

The Monthly Honorarium of Rs 2000/-as fixed by the Central Government are not provided, instead we are receiving an irregular payment of Rs 800/-, Rs 1000/-, Rs 1200/-, Rs 1400/-, Rs 1600/- varies from one Districts to another, one CHC to another, one PHC to another’s etc. which caused a great financial hardships and mental agony to all of us.

The MAWU said that the government are well aware that it put a great risk to us, our children and family as a whole as well as the time we are in needs of essentials etc.

Therefore if the government couldn’t release our pending dues and also couldn’t provide adequate self-protection materials to all ASHA and PPE to ASHA who are in areas of Red and Orange Zone of East Khasi Hills District within one week with effect from today.

The Union also clearly mention that “We will be having No other option, but to boycott our duty. Our rights and justice should not be neglected. Hence, in this respect we urged your honour, to consider this as a serious matter”, said Smti Sorilang Marboh President and M. June Myrsing as General Secretary.
