The MHRC seeks report from Government on incident at Umnoid of SWK District

Shillong, March 10: The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC), Shillong has taken suo motu cognizance of the news item published on  26th February, 2021 under the caption Masked men kill worker from Assam in SWKH, College shut .

The MHRC has sent a notice to the Chief Secretary, Government of Meghalaya to have the matter enquired into by the concerned Commissioner of Division and to submit its report to the Commission on the actions and steps taken by the Government to apprehend the miscreants.

The Commission has also asked the Government on the measures proposed to be taken to prevent recurrence of such incidents in the future and the quantum of interim relief proposed to be granted to the deceased and the injured persons in that tragic incident.

The Commission reminded the State of its obligation under Article 21 of the Constitution of India to protect and safeguard the Right to Life and the Right to Livelihood of individuals within the State. Article 21 of the Constitution mandates for protection of life and personal liberty for every person within the territory of India.
