The MLCU to commemorate the International Year of Indigenous Languages

Shillong, Nov 18: The Department of English and Communication, Martin Luther Christian University, will hold a two-day event to commemorate the International Year of Indigenous Languages on the 19th and 20th of November 2019 with an aim to raise awareness on the crucial role languages play in people’s lives.

The objectives of this event are to create awareness on the vital role played by each indigenous language in the North Eastern Region of India and to protect, preserve and promote linguistic diversity.

The inaugural programme will be held on the 19th of November 2019 at MLCU Main Campus, Nongrah. The Inauguration will include the Thomas Jones Oration by Dr. Andrew J May, great great grandson of Thomas Jones.

This will be followed by the release of Dr. Janet Hujon’s translation and commentary of Soso Tham’s Ki Sngi Barim U Hynniew Trep. The book will be released by Kong Sarahline Giri Tham, great great grandniece of Soso Tham.

A panel discussion will also be held on ‘The need to protect, preserve and promote the Indigenous Languages of Northeast India’ which will be chaired by Shri Paul Lyngoh, EM, KHADC.

The 2nd day of the event will be marked by presentations of traditional dance forms from various tribes of North East, tasting of indigenous food items and a narration of community folktales. The two-day programme will culminate with a playing of traditional games.
