Tura, April 22: The Garo National Council (GNC) held its annual conference at Sibbari, the birthplace of its then departed president late Clifford R. Marak. In the conference the party highlighted the contribution of Garo national council since the formation of the party in the year of 1947. The Garo National Council played the key role in making of district council under Assam province during the year 1940s and 1950s under the leadership of late Captain Williamson Sangma the first president of GNC and late Emonsing sangma the first general secretary of GNC. During the time, that GNC was in power in GHADC, The GHADC passed the important bills for the overall development and safeguard of the people of Garos in particular and general public in general.
The GNC also recall the importance bills passed by the GHADC under GNC were, the Garo hills cotton trade regulations 1955. The Garo Hills district (Jhum) regulations 1954. The Garo hills district (transfer of land) act. 1955. The Garo hills district (constitution of village councils) act. 1958. etc. The GNC played the key role in passing of Garos Customery law recently in GHADC. The recent Garo Customery bill passed by the GHADC wills not Distrub the rights of every children and grand children of mixed marriages family. The bill shall be affected only those children and grandchildren whose parents done mixed marriages after the bill receive the governor’s assent.
The bill has been passed after due consultation with all the stakeholders and all the stakeholders brought into confidence, the conference said. The Garo national council played the very important role during the Meghalayan struggled for creation of Meghalaya statehood in 1960s. The garo national council responded to the clarion call of APHLC and organised the various public meetings all over the Garo hills echoing slogan, “we want hill state, no hill state, no rest.” the Garo National Council continuing the separate statehood demand for the people of Garo hills inline linguistic commission 1956, based on linguistic, culture and traditions of garos. the demand for garoland state hood become louder, since the resolution for creation of Garoland state hood passed in the GHADC unanimously.
The conference thanked all the present MDCs for supporting and passing the bill for Garoland state hood issue in GHADC. The conference resolved to intensify the demand for Garoland state hood under the banner of Garo National Council till the demand met. The NGC is hoping to win in 6 to 7 constituencies in the upcoming 2018 assembly election. The GNC requested all the party workers to mobilize the party in all over Garo hills.The conference requested all well wishers to join in the party. The Garo National Council is the only regional political party of Garos.
The conference elect new office bearers for the central executive committee, headquarter at Tura. The wife of late Clifford R. Marak Smti Kalpana D. Sangma elected as president, formal deputy CEM and Silkigre MDC Mr Augustine R. Marak and Haringston R. Marak elected as vice president. Mr Henysing A. Sangma elected as general secretary. Mr Lukas T. Sangma and Paul Sangma elected as join General Secretary. Mr Jinbirth Marak MDC of Amongpara constituency and Mr Winison Ch. Marak MDC Rongrikim constituency elected as organising secretary. Smti Vanisha D. Sangma elected as accountant cum treasure. The conference elected 18 executive members to the party.
