The statistic show about the death caused by malaria in Meghalaya is alarming said TUR

Shillong, August  27: It is now the Third Day of hunger strike by All Meghalaya Malaria Programme Worker’s Association at the gates of Health Department (DHS) in Laitumkhrah, Shillong. This association of retrenched Multi-Purpose Programme Worker’s (MPW) of National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) has for last two years campaigned the Meghalaya government to regularize their services as it was envisaged in the original NVBDCP.  These striking workers many of whom had their last six month’s salary stolen by the Health Department are falling ill and are yet to receive any attention from the Government.

These workers have been forced to go on a hunger strike because for the last two years, the administration of the Health Department including the (now retrenched) Health Minister had made false promises and assurances. TUR is shocked at the heartless attitude of former  Health Minister Mr. A. L. Hek who knowing that he was no longer the health minister, yesterday night summoned the striking workers rather than coming to them and tried to mislead them again by playing the blame game.

Thma U Rangli Juki condemns the reckless attitude of the government that treats its citizens as a perishable commodity. It is shocking that no one from the government or Health department has even made an attempt to understand the grievances of these workers who have come from all over the state. This attitude is not surprising because the Health Department is a den of corrupt practices, whether in procuring medically suspect Infertilty/Male Potency drugs and expired medicines or in employing politically connected unqualified personnel for its various programmes or mysteriously losing key files.

National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) was started in 2010 in order to eradicate/reduce Malaria deaths in states where Vector Borne diseases had assumed epidemic levels due to state’s apathy towards this serious public health issue. The Central Government started NVBP as an emergency five year measure to provide required work force and skills to fight public health disaster. Central Government in all its communiqués to the state kept insisting that the work done by MPW needs to      regularize so that the benefits accruing out of this Programme could be made sustainable and permanent.

Even Meghalaya government’s own data (received through RTI) bears out the benefits of this programme and impact of the work of MPW.  As it can be seen that Malaria Deaths were going down till September 2014 when MPWs were retrenched and then there was an almost 100% increase in deaths.

The statistic show about the death caused by malaria in the state is alarming said TUR in the press statement, TUR, has shown that,    in the Year 2010 where the programmed started, the death of people caused by malaria are 87, in 2011 has reduce to 53, in the year 2012 has come down to 52, in 2013, it was 62, and in 2014 is 47.

But since 2014 when the Workers were retrenched from their services  the death of people in the state caused due to malaria is on the rise where till 2015 is was 80.
