Shillong, March 14: Wheelchair basketball introductory camp was inaugurated today, 13 th March, 2019 at Labon Indoor Sports Stadium by Smt. M. War. Nongbri, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills, Shillong, Meghalaya in the presence of Shri. M.B. Tongper, MCS, Addl Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills, Shillong and Mrs. Kalyani Rajaraman, Secretary General, Wheelchair Basketball Federation of India.
There 11 women and 11 men, totaling 22 participants in all. Captain Louis George Meprath and Shri. Krishnanand are the coaches. This camp is conducted in partnership with District Election Officer, District Sports Promotion Society, East Khasi Hills, Shillong, Meghalaya and Star Health and Allied Insurance Company Ltd.
Bethany Society helped to mobilise players and Shishu Sarothi from Assam helped us with sports wheelchairs. District administration has organised medical help desk and ambulance. All participants were also given awareness on election process specifically for the handicapped.
After the coaching camp there will be an Exhibition Match on March 14 at 4pm at the same venue. People are requested to come watch the game and cheer the players. Entry is free.
