There is no scope for compromise when it comes to the future of our children:Dr Mukul

Williamnagar, July 1:The Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma said that there is no scope for compromise when it comes to the future of our children so there is a need to get out of the conventional mode of administration of Government colleges and informed that the Education department is now coming up with a new format where there would no more inter-transferable system for teachers.

He was addressing the gathering as the chief guest at a function to mark the opening of Science Stream and inauguration of the newly constructed additional building of Williamnagar Government College in the presence of local MLA & Minister for School Education & Literacy, Deborah C.Marak, Parliamentary Secretaries Cherak W. Momin, Brigady Marak, Sengnam Marak and Marthone J. Sangma, Principal Secretary, Education, D.P.Wahlang, Director, Higher & Technical Education, Ram Singh, Director, School Education & Literacy, Ambrose Marak, East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, H.B. Marak, district officials, academicians, parents and students on Saturday.

In order to accommodate more students from across the district, the 5-room Assam-type additional building was constructed with the assistance of over Rs. 34 lakh under Chief Minister’s Special Urban Development Fund. Meanwhile, 31 students have taken admission so far in the first batch of the newly opened Science Stream in the College.

In his address the Chief Minister informed that according to the new format only those teachers who would be willing to stay in a particular place of posting for a long term should apply in the colleges so that they will not apply for transfer to another college whenever vacancies arise and deprive the students of their right to quality education. He was of the view that if we want the generation next to be productive we should be able to take care of their potentialities and create that enabling environment to make them have a sense of self-realization of their own capacities.

As such the State government has initiated the 125 million dollar Human Capital Development programme which would take care of the school infrastructure, including digital learning, up-scaling of teaching and skilling of students in the rural areas so that they are able to compete with their urban counterparts, he said. He appealed to the implementing departments to complete these projects on time and dedicate them to the children of the state, so that they would be able to get more funds.

Stating that the students of class 11 and 12 were still minors, the Chief Minister spoke of the move to delink class 11 and 12 from colleges. He also assured that all the requirements submitted by the Williamnagar Govt College Students’ Union (WGCSU) in their memorandum, including the need to have more extra-curricular activities would be fulfilled. He also urged upon the department to prepare a master plan for the college as per the land available.

Local MLA & Minister Deborah Marak expressed her happiness that with construction of the new building the college would now be able to cater to more students from the district. She said that the poor pass percentage of the students in science stream in the district was a cause of concern and hoped that the opening of science stream would help to improve the pass percentage and also meet the needs of students who aspire to take up science in their higher studies.
