Shillong April 30: The 29th National Road Safety Week organised by the Office of the District Transport Officer, Shillong in collaboration with the District Administration and Police Department, East Khasi Hills concluded today at a function held at U Soso Tham Auditorium, Shillong.
Meghalaya Chief Secretary, Shri Y. Tsering attended the programme as the Chief Guest in the presence of the Additional Chief Secretary, in charge Transport department, Shri K. N. Kumar, Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills, Shri P. S. Dkhar, Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills, Shri D. N. R. Marak, Commissioner of Transport, Shri I.W.Ingty, government officials, teachers and students.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Secretary enlightened the gathering about the Good Samaritan, who as the first responder helps the victims of road accident. He further informed that as per law, a Good Samaritan who helps road accidents victims shall not be liable for any criminal liability.
He also advised the students to use the zebra crossing while crossing the road and always be watchful while walking and as a co-passenger in the vehicle you have every right to alert the driver to obey traffic rules to avoid any accident, said the Chief Secretary.
To make the road safer for all and also to minimize the occurrence of road accidents and the resultant loss of lives, Shri Tsering urged every citizens it the State to be responsible by following the traffic rules.
Other highlights of the day included administering of “my traffic pledge” by the Chief Guest, song and skit presentation by the troupes of Smti Silbi Passah on the importance of traffic signals and the need of self regulation to observe traffic rules at all times to avoid road accident.
During the week long celebrations various road safety awareness programme for students and drivers are being undertaken with the aim to reduce instances of over speeding, drinking and driving, driving without helmet and seat belts. The activities include pasting of posters, banners among other things to highlight the cause.
