Shillong, May 08: The Department of Pathology, North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), Shillong has brought laurels to the institute with outstanding achievements at the 7th South Asian Academy of Cytopathology and Histopathology Conference, held at Paro, Bhutan from 21st to 23rd April 2026.
Dr. Biswajit Dey (Associate Professor, Department of Pathology) was awarded First Prize for his research presentation titled “Clinicopathological profile and molecular classification of muscle invasive bladder cancer based on a simplified panel of immunohistochemistry” in Oral paper presentation category.
Dr. Naveen Kumar (Assistant Professor, Department of Pathology) secured the Second Prize in the same category for his presentation on “Molecular profiling and clinicopathological association of endometrial carcinomas presenting at a tertiary care institute of Northeast India.”
It is important to note that both the award-winning studies are part of the ongoing research initiatives at NEIGRIHMS focusing on the molecular profiling of cancers prevalent in Northeast India.
The research highlights the growing role of molecular pathology and immunohistochemistry in improving cancer classification, prognostication and personalized treatment strategies.
Prof. Nalin Mehta, Director, NEIGRIHMS congratulated both the faculty for their achievements at international forum. Prof. Mehta further added that such achievements reflect the institute’s commitment towards advancing cancer research, molecular studies and academic excellence, further strengthening NEIGRIHMS’ academic presence and contribution in South Asian countries.
The awardees expressed their gratitude to Sr. Prof. Vandana Raphael (HOD, Department of Pathology) for her guidance, encouragement and for providing a supportive academic and research environment that enabled the successful completion and presentation of these studies.
