ANVC (B) bandh concludes peacefully in Garo Hills

TURA, 20 Dec: The ANVC (B) sponsored all Garo Hills seven hour band from 5am to 12pm concluded peacefully today with no untoward incidents reported.

The ANVC (B) had called for a 24 hour bandh on 20th December in remembrance of ‘fallen martyrs’ amidst protests from citizens and NGOs from Garo Hills.

They later reduced the bandh timings to seven hours even as Civil Societies and NGOs led by the Movement for Peace and Harmony had urged the breakaway fraction of the ANVC to call of the bandh in view of the Christmas celebrations.

The streets and thoroughfares of Garo Hills wore a deserted look as business establishments, government offices and educational institutions were totally shut down during the length of the bandh. The bandh was felt in the plain belt areas of Garo hills too with minimal activity taking place throughout the bandh.

In Tura the end of the bandh saw a flurry of activity even as people rushed to make last minute purchases for Christmas decorations and essential commodities. (SP News)
