As part of the commemoration of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav Bijli Mahotsav celebrated at Mairang

Mairang, July 26: As part of the commemoration of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, a district level celebration of Bijli Mahotsav under the umbrella of Ujjwal Bharat, Ujjwal Bhavishya- Power @ 2047 was today organised by the District Administration, Eastern West Khasi Hills District, Mairang in collaboration with NEEPCO, Shillong and MeECL at Tirot Sing Memorial Hall, Pyndengumiong, Mairang.

The celebration was attended the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker, Shri Metbah Lyngdoh as Chief Guest in the presence of Deputy Commissioner, Eastern West Khasi Hills District, Shri W. Nongsiej, government officials, traditional heads, VEC members, teachers and students.

Speaking as Chief Guest at the programme, Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker, Shri Metbah Lyngdoh congratulated the District Administration, Eastern West Khasi Hills District, NEEPCO, Shillong and MeECL for organizing the programme which provides the right platform for highlighting the importance of power in day to day life and to create awareness on various schemes and programmes of the Power Department.

On the occasion, Shri Lyngdoh also spoke about the different programmes organized by various government departments and stakeholders to commemorate Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav-India@75,the countrywide celebration of 75 years of India’s Independence which coincides with the celebration of Meghalaya’s 50 years of statehood even as he said that citizens have reaped the benefits of such programme through awareness creation thereunder.

Speaking about the different interventions in the power sector initiated by the central government in collaboration with states and union territories, the Speaker stated that the schemes and programmes have immensely benefitted the citizens of the state and country.

Laying emphasis on energy conservation, Shri Lyngdoh also took the occasion to urge upon the citizens of the Eastern West Khasi Hills District in particular and the State in general to make judicious use of power made available to them as part of the energy conservation process.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner, Eastern West Khasi Hills District, Shri W. Nongsiej in his speech talked about Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and dwelt at length on the history and legacy of Khasi freedom fighter, Ka Phan Nonglait whose valour and bravery in the freedom struggle against British occupation is still remembered to this day.

Other highlights of the celebration include testimonials from beneficiaries of schemes from the power department, screening of short films depicting achievements in the power sector including films entitled Universal Household Electrification, Village Electrification, Distribution System Strengthening, Capacity Addition, Consumer Rights, Renewable Energy, etc.

Colour was added to the programme by the skit (Nukkad Natak) performed by students of Mairang Presbyterian  Higher Secondary School, Mairang and action song performed by students of St. Xavier Secondary School, Nongkhlaw.

It may be mentioned that the purpose of the observance of Ujjwal Bharat, Ujjwal Bhavishya is to showcase the achievements and strides taken by the power and renewable energy sector since Independence as also the vision of the country for this sector in the run up to the year 2047 when the country completes 100 years of Independence.

Others who spoke during the programme include DGM, NEEPCO, Shillong Smti. Loretta A Kharmawphlang, Superintending Engineer (Khasi Hills) Distribution Circle, MeECL,  Shri K. Chyrmang, Assistant Executive Engineer, Mairang Distribution, MePDCL, Mairang, Shri Banpynbitlang Kharkamni and  Sordar of Pyndengumiong, Shri Bornard Syiemiong who presided over the function.
