Cabinet approved the proposed repurposing of 273.41 acres of MeECL land for tourism in Umiam

Shillong, June 13: The Cabinet meeting held today that chair by the Chief minister Mr. Conrad K Sangma has adopted a resolution to formally acknowledge, with profound gratitude, the role played by various agencies and government departments, especially the Meghalaya Police in effectively handling the recent incident in Sohra.

In the meeting the cabinet approved the proposed repurposing of 273.41 acres of unutilized MeECL land for tourism development. The land will be leased to the Tourism Department on a revenue-sharing basis to promote tourism projects.

Key locations include the IB campus, land from Le-junction to Nongsdier village, areas behind the MeECL school and NHRDC, Block V, and Lumpongdeng Island.This move aims to monetize idle land and boost tourism infrastructure in the state.

The Cabinet approved the Chief Minister’s Regional Connectivity Scheme 2025, aimed at enhancing connectivity by linking District Headquarters with Block and Regional Headquarters. The initiative will introduce a fleet of 90 buses to bridge the commute gap for students, office workers, and the general public.

Under the scheme, financial support of up to 50% of the total vehicle cost will be provided. Of this, the government will contribute 35% towards the on-road cost as a down payment. Beneficiaries will contribute 5%, while the remaining 60% will be financed through loans repayable over a five-year period.

The  Cabinet today decided to revisit the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA) in light of the recent unfortunate incident in Sohra. The aim is to further strengthen the Act to better prevent criminal activities carried out under the guise of tourism. This decision reflects our commitment to ensuring the safety and security of residents, while continuing to welcome genuine tourists to our state.
