Health Department, South West Garo Hills, observes “World Rabies Day” 2024 in Ampati

Ampati, Sept 27: On Friday, the Health Department of South West Garo Hills, in collaboration with the Veterinary and Education Departments, organized a successful World Rabies Day event at Birin Nuchong School, Ampati. This year’s theme, “Breaking Rabies Boundaries,” emphasized a “One Health Approach to Rabies Elimination.”

The event was graced by Crystal R. N. Sangma, BDO Betasing, as the Chief Guest, alongside other esteemed attendees, including Emphul Marak, SDSEO, and Dr. Gilsang Marak, AH & Veterinary Officer. Students and teachers from Birin Nuchong School also participated, contributing to the vibrant atmosphere.

A poster-making competition was held to mark the event, with students showcasing their creativity and knowledge about rabies prevention. Prizes were distributed to the winners by the Chief Guest.

In her address, Crystal R. N. Sangma congratulated the winners and highlighted the importance of observing World Rabies Day, stressing the need for awareness and preventive measures to achieve the goal of rabies elimination.

The event featured several informative keynote addresses. Dr. Gilsang Marak delivered an in-depth presentation on rabies, covering topics such as the nature of the disease, prevention strategies, and the critical role of vaccination. He also shared the goal of eradicating rabies in India by 2030.

He elaborated on the importance of timely vaccinations for pets and livestock, encouraging the community to take preventive measures.

Emphul Marak emphasized the history of vaccination, the harmful consequences of rabies, and the need for pet vaccinations. He highlighted how advanced vaccination techniques play a vital role in protecting both pets and humans.

The event also included a keynote address by Dr. Matgrik K. Sangma, Medical and Health Officer and District Nodal Officer for the National Rabies Control Programme.

Dr. Sangma discussed the immediate steps to take following an animal bite, assured participants that anti-rabies vaccines are safe for pregnant women and infants, and explained the vaccine dosage schedule and types.

To conclude the event, participants took a pledge to support rabies eradication efforts, followed by a rally led by the students and teachers of Birin Nuchong School to raise awareness about rabies control among the citizens of Ampati.
