Ampati, June 14: The Department of Social Welfare, South West Garo Hills, Ampati, organized an awareness programme under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan initiative, marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
The event, held at the Multi Facility Centre, Ampati, was themed “The evidence is clear: invest in prevention” and engaged school students in a day full of educational activities and rallies, aiming to educate and empower them about the dangers of drug abuse and the importance of prevention.
The day-long programme included a variety of activities, with a highlight being a student rally through Ampati, advocating against drug use and illicit trafficking.
The rally emphasized the community’s commitment to a drug-free environment and fostered a community-wide spirit of prevention and awareness among the youth.
Ravi K Sangma, MPS, DSP of South West Garo Hills, addressed the students, emphasizing the importance of youth empowerment in driving change and promoting drug prevention initiatives. He urged students to maintain a clean lifestyle, avoid negative influences, and report any instances of substance abuse they might encounter among peers.
Dr. Matgrik K Sangma, Medical and Health Officer, Ampati, provided insights into the severe effects of drug abuse on health. Tanya Derimchi Ch. Marak, Legal cum Probation Officer, DCPU, Ampati, elaborated on the legal repercussions and laws related to drug abuse.
A key highlight of the event was the collective pledge taken by attendees to abstain from drugs and contribute to making India a drug-free nation.
In the lead-up to the main event, a slogan writing competition on drug abuse and illicit trafficking was held on June 7, 2024, for students from various schools and prizes were distributed to the best three slogan writers during the awareness programme. Additionally, a similar awareness programme was successfully conducted at Garobadha Government Higher Secondary School on June 11, 2024.
