Leader of opposition Dr. Mukul raises demand for rehabilitation of surrendered militants

Shillong, Sept 14: The Leader of Opposition, Dr. Mukul Sangma, questioned the NPP-led MDA government on the initiatives to continue the rehabilitation process of the GNLA leaders. In 2018, Dr. Mukul Sangma welcomed the surrender of 8 GNLA leaders, and subsequently launched a rehabilitation programme for them.

Mentioning the initiative, he said “I was once confronted by the aggrieved members of the then GNLA leaders who had agreed to accept the offer of the government, to withdraw themselves from being a part of the terror organization and be a part of the govt’s rehabilitation policy and schemes, to assimilate themselves in the growth of the state.”

Highlighting the importance of such corrective programmes, he said, “There was a programme initiated by the state government in addition to the rehabilitation package which was offered based on the tripartite agreement by the GoI and then NBC. A separate programme was made by the state government to reach out to all the members of the militant organization, including the GNLA.”

Castigating the negligence of the ruling dispensation, he said, “I would like the government to look, review and ensure the completion of this sole package.” It is to be mentioned that earlier, Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma, had previously admitted that militancy is growing in the state at par with rising unemployment. Therefore, it seems that the proxy-BJP government is reluctant in initiating processes to rehabilitate the distraught youth and consequently, ensure sustainable peace in Meghalaya.
