Meghalaya CM taken up with Assam CM on the death of Niksamseng at the NLFC in Goalpara

Shillong, July 09: Meghalaya Chief Minister Mr. Conrad K Sangma today has written a letter to the counterpart  of the Assam Chief Minister Mr. Himanta Biswa Sarma  to bring to his attention a disturbing incident that requires immediate investigation and action.

“That a resident of my state, (L) Niksamseng Ch Marak, was arrested by Assam police on July 2, 2024 and was sent to a rehabilitation centre in Goalpara Assam. However, two days later, he was found dead in the rehab centre – “New Life Foundation Centre, Nayapara, Goalpara”, under suspicious circumstances”, said Mr Conrad.

“As informed by his family, the centre’s authorities initially claimed it was a suicide, but later changed their statement, raising serious concerns about the turn of events. I have been informed that the body bore severe injury marks, including, deep knife cut injury on the left side of his face, burns, severe injury marks on the chin, hips, and legs”.

These prima facie injuries suggest that Niksamseng was subjected to brutal torture, beating, and stabbing inside the rehab centre.  Therefore, in view of the above circumstance, Chief minister of Meghalaya asked the chief minister of Assam to immediately investigate the incident, which is also desired by the family to bring justice.

The family has lodged and FIR into the incident, your kind intervention to investigate the matter by constituting an enquiry will be highly appreciated, stated Meghalaya Chief Minister in his letter sent to his counterpart  Assam Chief minister.
