Shillong, Oct 29: ‘Run for Unity’will be organised from the North Eastern Hill Universityon the occasion of National Unity Day to celebrate the 147th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
The ‘Run for Unity’ program will begin at 7 AM on October 31st from Gate No. 5 of NEHU. The spot registration for the run will start from 6:30 AM. The organizers, Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) National Service Scheme (NSS) and the Office of the Dean Students’ Welfare (DSW), and Sports Department, NEHU, have also arranged for Unity Pledge for Teaching and Non-Teaching and Students of the University.
The initiative is being held keeping in line with the nationwide celebrations of the RashtriyaEktaDiwas(National Unity Day)to foster and reinforce the dedication to preserve and strengthen the unity, integrity and security of the country.
NYKS, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports is organizing 75,000 Unity Runs across the country between 7-9 AM on 31st October, with the involvement of members of youth clubs of the district, volunteers, voluntary organizations, Panchayati Raj Institutions, Sports Institutions, Community Institutions and Secondary, Higher and Higher Educational institutions.
Unity Pledge will be administered to the participants and cycle and motorcycle rallies will also be organized nationwide as part of the celebrations. A week-long ‘EktaSaptah’ (Unity Week) is underway from October 25 till October 31 under the aegis of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav with the theme of PanchPran as proposed by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on Independence Day.
The National Unity Day is celebrated on October 31st every year to honour Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, whoplayed a leading role in India’s freedom struggle and made unparalleled contribution to the merger of the princely states into the Republic of India.
Unity Runs scheduled to be held across the country is expected to honor his contributions and strengthen the feelings of patriotism and national unity among the citizens of the country.
