NGOs from Garo Hills demand that 50 percent seat in NEHU be reserved for Local Students

Shillong, July 26:  The NGOs from Garo Hills have received several complaints from the students about how their attempt to get admission for higher studies have been hampered and made an expensive and unsuccessful proposition.

The NGOs from Garo Hills have propose to Nehu Tura Campus can offer better services to the campus students. The conglomeration of four NGOs that is AYWO, GSU, ADE and FKJGP put forth before the authority of NEHU.

In cognizance of the difficulties being faced by the students they agree that the NEHU administration took was in the right direction and we highly appreciate the extension of the form submission for PG courses till 5th August’19 and the response from the Controller of Examination, NEHU that degree results will be declared before the 5th Aug’19.

But even this step does not solve outright the problems faced by the students who have applied for PG courses or higher studies in different universities in different states because their applications for admission have been rejected on the ground that the students could not give the overall percentage of their degree course or prove that they have successfully completed their degrees.

The question is very pertinent owing to the fact that NEHU is not able to absorb all their students for PG courses. Because of the fact that even now degree results have yet to be declared the career prospects of some students have been blunted. Since NEHU cannot accommodate all the students what will the some students who will eventually be not absorbed to NEHU PG course.

The declaration of the results of the Degree students is late which is hampering or has hampered their aspiration for higher studies as they are not able to apply in other universities. If NEHU is delaying their results and making them loose precious academic years, then NEHU should create more seats in order to absorb these students .

The NGOs, from Garo Hills urged the higher authorities in Shillong NEHU campus regarding this matter several times from before, NEHU has yet to take a decision on the matter. The local students must have 50 percent seats reserved for them.

When the students’ marksheets are sent for re-evaluation/correction procedure to their alma mater a humungous amount of time is taken to get done. Is it due to negligence on the part of Examination Department or due to the negligence of the higher authorities or crisis of manpower in their respective colleges. The NGOs keep hearing that this is one of the reasons for the unusually late declaration of degree results by NEHU. Frankly, this matter must be looked into urgently.

NEHU must seriously look into the possibility of allowing Tura NEHU Campus to issue Degree Certificates which will be of great convenience to students especially those who have difficulty to travel to NEHU Shillong Campus. But for such a step, there must be an increase in manpower at NEHU Tura Campus.

The appointment of two Asst. Registrars is long overdue and the demand has been made years before but sadly it is an issue that NEHU Shillong is lending a deaf ear to. NEHU Tura Campus needs two Assistant Registrars to help the Joint Registrar whereas the Joint Registrar is taking the entire work load alone on his shoulders and which is hampering the quick processing of other necessary works. The appointment of two Asst. Registrar for NEHU Tura Campus is a must and must be immediately looked into.

There are other complications that students of Garo hills region face when they go to Shillong for collecting the certificates like bus fares, fooding and lodging etc. As we all know some students who hail from interior areas are not from well to do families and their journey to Shillong is an extra financial burden on their family. If MBOSE can do the needful to allow the Shillong Centre to issue certificates and other such necessary documents for their students then we can fairly infer that it is not impossible for NEHU.

The NGOs are privy to the knowledge that two new Departments is be set up or has allocated Department of Forestry and Master of Social work for Tura NEHU Campus. This would be a great boon for the aspiring students of the region which would also mean an increase in choices and also more seats for the local students. We, the people of Garo Hills, await with pulsing heartbeat and appreciation for the good step NEHU has taken for the region.

There is no Stationery in NEHU Tura Campus which wastes precious time and money of the students, stationery at NEHU Tura Campus would mitigate some of their hardships. We also believe that the set up of an ATM in the campus would be of great convenience to the students as they have to travel around 8-10 kms and where they also have to queue for withdrawing their money from the nearest ATM. It would also be very helpful to the local residents of that area such as Chandigre, Duragre, Rongandi, Durabanda etc. which would also be a great PR for NEHU.

The NGOs  oppose the very reason that the walk in interview for an Assistant Project Engineer conducted at Guwahati for NEHU Tura Campus. It should be either held in Shillong or Tura campus as there is no NEHU campus in Assam.

We can make a fair assumption, insinuate corruption/nepotism and that something of nefarious design is afoot? Or is it the iniquitous agenda to recruit non locals by conducting the interview in Assam with bribery in play? We are seriously thinking about filing a court case against such a turn of events.

The NGOs has highlight these issues and are laying down some demands for the strict benefit of the students of the region and students from every corner of the country. We keep open the option of resorting to agitations should the need arise for such steps and are very ready to sacrifice our freedom for the same. We urge NEHU for speedy redressal of the grievances for the greater good of the students and NEHU Tura Campus. Said Mr Tengsak  G Momin GSU President in the press statement issued today.
