PCI issued guidelines to the media not to reveal the identities of sex workers during arrest

Shillong, Jan 05:3: On the basis of direction of the Supreme Court, the Press Council of India has issued guidelines to the media to take utmost care not to reveal the identities of sex workers during arrest, raid and rescue operations, whether as victims or accused and not to publish or telecast any photos that would result in disclosure of such identities.

Besides, the newly introduced Section 354C IPC which make voyeurism a criminal offence, should be strictly adhered by the media, so as not to publish/telecast photos of sex workers with their clients in the garb of capturing the rescue operation.

Accordingly, the same has been incorporated as norm in Norms of Journalistic Conduct, 2022 which has been released by the Minister of Information and  Broadcasting, Government of India on the occasion of National Press Day on 16.11.2022. The updated edition of the Norms of Journalistic Conduct is available on the Council’s website at www.presscouncil.nic.in.
